Before you start
- An accessible Search Console property and enough data for a meaningful comparison.
Set it up, step by step
- Select a complete reporting period and open Search diagnostics.
- Choose Load the selected-day report. Check both current and comparison dates.
- Review the CTR curve by average-position band, then searches gaining or losing clicks.
- Review website sections, search for a query of interest and export relevant rows if needed.
In the dashboard menu: Advanced tools → Search diagnostics (click Advanced tools to open that section).
How to use it
Investigate large changes alongside impressions and page context. A small click count can produce a large percentage change.
Record one review task rather than automatically changing every title below an observed CTR band.
What the results mean
The CTR curve reflects your returned queries, not an industry benchmark or promised uplift.
Positive position improvement means a lower, better average position. Website sections group returned pages by path; collection is bounded.
If something goes wrong
A query is marked missing from one period
It may be absent from collected or privacy-limited rows; that alone does not prove a gained or lost ranking.
The curve looks uneven
Low volumes and mixed query intent can make bands unstable. Widen the period and read coverage notes.
Keep going
- Use search reports, filters and saved views
- Review SEO opportunities without chasing every warning
- Organise SEO tasks and dated notes
