First, check what Google actually knows
Search Google for site:yourwebsite.com.au (with your own address). If nothing appears, Google may not have your pages in its index at all. If pages appear but you don’t show for your services, Google knows the site but isn’t ranking it highly yet. Those two problems have different fixes.
Reason 1: Google hasn’t found or indexed your pages
New websites, or websites that were never added to Google Search Console, can take a long time to be found.
- Add your website to Google Search Console and verify you own it.
- Submit your sitemap (often yourwebsite.com.au/sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml).
- Check the Pages report for pages marked “not indexed”, and the reason Google gives.
- Make sure your important pages are linked from your menu or home page.
Reason 2: you’re on Google, just too far down
This is the most common situation. Your pages appear, but on page 3, 4 or 5, where almost nobody looks. Search Console shows this as plenty of impressions with an average position above 20 and very few clicks. Rewriting page titles rarely fixes this on its own; Google needs more reasons to trust the website for that search.
Reason 3: local searches show the map first
For searches like “plumber near me” or “blocked drains Logan”, Google often shows a map with three businesses before any websites. Those come from Google Business Profile, not your website. Without a profile you can’t appear in that map at all, however good the website is.
A free Google Business Profile, with the right category, your service areas, opening hours, photos and genuine customer reviews, is usually the fastest way for a local service business to start getting calls from Google. Businesses that work from home can hide their address and show service areas instead.
Reason 4: the pages don’t clearly say what and where
Each main service deserves its own page that says plainly what you do, the areas you cover, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to book. Very thin pages, or many near-identical suburb pages, give Google little reason to rank them.
Reason 5: not enough other websites mention you
Google looks at whether other trustworthy websites mention or link to you: local directories, suppliers, industry associations, local news or community sites. A few genuine mentions from relevant local sites help more than many low-quality links. Avoid paying for bulk links; they can do more harm than good.
What to do this week
Set up or claim your Google Business Profile, ask five recent happy customers for a Google review, make sure Search Console has your sitemap, and check each service page clearly says what you do and where. Then watch impressions and average position over the next four to eight weeks; search changes are rarely instant.
